Founded in Dresden the company was rebuilt after World War II as a Greenfield operation in Herne. In following years the company expanded and established several overseas plant. At any time the company has been linked to the cigarette industry and supported it with several developments.

International expansion started in the 1960's with Benkert Suisse, later followed by Benkert UK, Malaysia and China.

Benkert is a global partner of the cigarette industry, serving all multinational and local customers. Products and services were developed to support changes in the cigarette market. Perforation technologies as well as enhanced print products were developed and marketed.
